The Flaming Lips need all that CO2 for their confetti machines

AUGUST 7--So what artist needs those six 70-pound canisters of carbon dioxide?

Among the dozens of acts identified by contestants, Kiss was the leading vote recipient. Other top choices of the more than 650 entrants included Metallica; U2; Ozzy Osbourne; Coldplay; Britney Spears; and the Blue Man Group. But the most interesting guess came from a reader who concluded that the CO2 was required for "Lawrence Welk and his bubble machine."

But the band with the large carbon footprint is The Flaming Lips, which needs the gas to power its confetti machines.

A small group of contestants correctly identified the band, and from that group five names will be drawn at random, with the winners getting their choice of a title on The New York Times fiction or nonfiction best seller list.
